Will settling my merchant cash advance hurt my credit?
Last updated
Most merchant cash advances are not reported to the consumer credit bureaus, so the settlement itself usually doesn't appear on your personal consumer credit the way a defaulted credit card might. However, related events can have effects: a UCC lien can impede future business borrowing, and a lawsuit or judgment is public record. Resolving the debt through settlement and clearing the associated UCC filings is generally better for your long-term business credit profile than letting it proceed to judgment.
The real credit risk is a judgment
The biggest credit-adjacent risk is usually an unresolved judgment and lingering UCC liens — which settlement is designed to clear. A public judgment and active UCC-1 filings do far more damage to your ability to get future business financing than a quietly settled advance.
